Featured Cabbie: Fabio Peralta

Every week, we focus the spotlight on a cab driver whose story encourages us to view the world through a new lens. This week’s featured cabbie is Fabio Peralta, a New York City hack who inspires his fares to get in touch with their creative sides.

The moment a passenger climbs into his Crown Victoria, Fabio Peralta hands her a pen and paper and tells her to draw something, “to create art, any kind of art.”

“Doctors, lawyers, bankers will say, ‘Hey, I’m no artist.’ And I tell them they become one in my cab,” Mr. Peralta said.

Over 40 years of driving, the cabbie has assembled a collection of 7,000 sketches from his art studio on wheels: “I’ve never had a painting I didn’t like, no matter how bad it is.”

I’m hoping Mr. Peralta will stop for me one day – I wonder if he’d accept a poem in lieu of a picture?
