Natasha, you're killing me. I'm dying to try your mami's empanadas now.
La Saltena were always the best tapas if you weren't making your own dough - that's actually what most of the home cooks I knew I Buenos Aires would use. Good to know you can find them in NYC - I thought I saw them at La Nueva in Jackson Heights, but they carry a different brand...

Sadly, I'm not quite sure there is a real Argentine-style empanada to be found in NYC, unless you go into the home of an Argentine!
My mother is Argentine and I grew up with the most amazing empanadas - even better than the chains in Buenos Aires, and the ones my aunts and uncles make. I don't know what the secret is, but mami makes the best. She used to get her tapas from a bodega in Queens, the Saltena brand al horno. Those were the best!

According to Daniel, El Porteno is no good (I haven't tried it myself). Chivito de Oro might be worth investigating. Did you know they actually eat more beef per capita in Uruguay than Argentina?

Is El Porteno in Jackson Heights no good? I had an okay meal there. I've heard good/better things about Chivito De Oro, even if it is Uruguayan.

Awww, here in Buenos Aires, without you, dear friends, at my side, I'm getting teary-eyed too, especially remembering our meal at El Obrero. Here's to a reunion en nuestro querido BsAs someday!

Terry, thanks to you and your colleague, I'll never forget the USAir Terminal.
I'm thrilled that you had a chance to check out the site - I really appreciate your words - and I'll be sure to report back if/when I find a great empanada in NYC. All the best to you.
