Hi John, Glad you saw the segment. I'm not an expert on either of these foods, unfortunately, as I haven't had a chance to try a lot of burgers or cupcakes (yet!). I liked the burger at the Parker Meridian Hotel's burger joint, but I have a feeling there are better ones in the city. I might get shot for this, but I really dig the brownie mint cupcake at Babycakes in the LES - even though it's gluten free. The other cupcakes there are just OK, but this one is like a shot of chocolate to the arm. As I said, much more tasting to do...

Hey, just saw you on Channel 7. Unfortunately, I haven't had the good fortune of stepping into a cab and having you as a driver!

Anyway, what's your vote for best burger and best cupcake?

Not sure if you know about this one, but we were pointed it out by a bar owner we befriended. It's in the East Village, it's called Punjabi Deli at 114 East 1st St, across from Katz's Deli. It has a green awning and you go down some steps to get in. It's tight on space but there's a little bar you can eat on, or eat on the steps outside. It's not bad at all, cheap and cheerful. For $3 you can get a bowl of rice and choice of 2 veggie curries (roti + 2 curries is $4). There are 7 curries to choose from and you order them by number. They do microwave the food to heat it up, but for the price, it makes for a great late night snack. It's frequented by cab drivers too.

[...] I’ve spent the past year getting into random New York taxis and asking drivers to deliver me to their favorite things to eat. While not every adventure led to something delicious, I ate a lot of food that earned exalted status in my taste memory. If I had 24 hours to eat in New York and wasn’t driving a cab, there are 15 cabbie-recommended dishes I’d definitely have to taste again. Here they are in random order (Please don’t ask me to rank them. It was hard enough to narrow it down to 15): Read ahead [...]
