Berlin Dispatch: A Taxi Driver’s Food & Drink Map

Foul (fava beans) and falafel with peanut sauce from Biladi Sudanesiche Spezialitaeten in Friedrichshain.
I expected to find great curry wurst and develop an addiction to döner kebab. What I didn’t expect were near-perfect Vietnamese curries (at Hamy), spectacular kofte (at Gel Gör), espresso as good as Italy’s (at La Vigna), and kidney beans worth a tram ride to Weissensee (at La Bandida). Berlin cabbies led me to all of this and more.
This map shows every restaurant I found during my Berlin taxi adventures that I think is worth going back to.
I’ve also included my own taxi driver-inspired food finds, many of which were suggestions from Berliners who know their way around what’s cheap and tasty in their city. (Thank you, my new food-loving friends!)

If you have a chance to try any of these spots, feel free to tell me what you think.
Meanwhile, stay tuned: I plan on coming back to Berlin in April 2011 to go on more taxi adventures and add some new flavors to this map.

Cool to have them all conveniently on a map. A perfect variety of great eats. I have discovered and enjoyed a lot of fantastic food at good prices through your suggestions (though I’ve lived here for nearly a decade and thought I had it all covered)! That’s priceless, thanks!!!
And I’ve discovered a lot of fantastic food in places I never would have found – thanks to your Berlin restaurant wisdom. Can’t wait to break bread again in the spring.
Wow! You sure having fun. Hooray!
